Christ says, “Anyone that does the will of My Father in heaven is my mother…and brother and sister.” Matthew 12:46-50 can be confusing unless we understand the heart of Jesus’ words–doing God’s will is our goal, it helps us become a family in the church. We are human sinners and this goal can be messy and difficult. We cannot do this on our own. But it is completely possible with the power of the Holy Spirit in us.
Loving others is hard work. We need God’s grace. We need to submit to the Spirit’s work in us. Loving others comes through in many ways in how we respond to each other. Whoever is a disciple of Jesus is in our family. What we do and say will reflect whether we love God and love our neighbor. Our family as Christians is bigger than we think!
